The How, The Why & The Heart Of It: A Q&A With Phil Dooley

How did our Africa Worship Tour come about?
The idea for the Worship Tour came from our desire to reach beyond what’s happening here in Cape Town. We’ve always said we’ve got a heart for the continent of Africa. One of the strengths of Hillsong is worship, and worship is something that gathers people. So we felt it was a great first step for us to launch beyond what we’re doing here as a local church, and gather churches, gather believers. Hopefully, people are going to bring friends who don’t know Christ along to each of the events, and it’s going to be something that really blesses each of the cities that we go to.
How long has the tour been in the pipeline?
I’d say probably over twelve months now. It was pretty much last year I started talking with [tour coordinator] Ron Martin about it. And then the beginning of this year we really kind of finalised that we were going to go ahead with this. So it’s been quite a while.
Why are we doing it?
We believe that what we can bring is something that stirs hope within people. When there’s a gathering, and there’s a sense of worship and praise and celebration, it magnifies God in our midst. I think it makes people see him, instead of the challenges. The places we’re going to, people are facing real challenges. And so, if we can keep pointing them to Jesus, it’s going to help them to realise that he is with them in the midst of whatever challenge, struggle, tragedy they may be going through. That’s the goal: to continue to lift up the name of Jesus, to continue to encourage people to know him and realise that he’s there for them and he loves them. That’s why we’re doing it, because we can’t keep this to ourselves.
